Open Gen-3 Alpha
From your dashboard, click "Gen-3 Alpha" (the primary text-to-video model). This is Runway's most capable model for generating high-quality video from text prompts.
Write your video prompt
Type a description of the scene you want to generate. Be specific: describe the subject, setting, camera movement, lighting, and mood. Runway responds well to cinematic language — "slow push-in," "golden hour," "shallow depth of field."
Set duration and generate
Choose the clip length (5 or 10 seconds). Click "Generate." Your clip renders in about 60–90 seconds and appears in your asset library ready to download or extend.
Your first prompt — paste this right now
This prompt demonstrates the key elements of a good Runway generation: a clear subject, specific lighting, camera movement, and a mood. Start with something simple like this to understand how the model responds, then try more complex scenes.
A single red poppy flower in a field of wheat, swaying gently in a warm summer breeze. Late afternoon golden hour light. Soft bokeh background. Slow push-in toward the flower. Cinematic, 4K quality, peaceful and beautiful mood.
3 tips that make a real difference
1. Describe camera movement explicitly
"Slow zoom in," "tracking shot from left to right," "bird's eye view slowly rotating" — Runway understands cinematography language. Adding camera movement makes clips feel intentional and professional rather than static.
2. Use "Extend" to make clips longer
Each generation is 5 or 10 seconds. Once you have a clip you like, click "Extend" to generate additional seconds that continue naturally from where it ended. You can chain multiple extensions to build a longer sequence.
3. Image-to-video often gives better results than text-to-video
Upload a reference image (a photo, a design mockup, even a screenshot) and describe the motion you want added. Runway's image-to-video mode tends to produce more predictable, higher-quality results than text-only prompts.
